Today is the 50th anniversay of the tragic Apollo fire that claimed the lives of Astronauts Gus Grissom, Edward H. White, Jr. and Roger Chaffee.
Much Indiana attention has focused on indiana native Gus Grissom of Mitchell, Indiana. Rightly so.In addition to all of Mr. Grissom's Indiana connections, he was associated with Crosby boats of Indiana, an Allen County manufacturer of racing boats. Mr. Grissom visited Harlan, Indiana, where the boats were made.
But there was a deep connection to Fort Wayne of Edward Higgins White, Jr., one of the two others who perished with Gus Grissom.
Ed White's parents were Major General Edward Higgins White, Sr. and Mary Haller, both of Fort Wayne
Major General Edward White, Sr. was a graduate of West Point as was his son.
