Every national news organization is reporting today on the wildfires burning in the Angeles National Forest near Los Angeles, California.
The National Forest Service spokesman providing the information for all these reports is Stanton Florea, a Fort Wayne native. He is a graduate of Carroll High School and Ball State University and was an outstanding runner athlete at both institutions.
He is also the son of Dick and Phyllis Florea. Dick Florea was the longtime news director and anchor at Fort Wayne's NBC affiliate WKJG, Channel 33.
I talked with Dick Florea this afternoon after hearing Stanton Florea on NPR. The younger Florea surely picked up useful knowledge growing up by observing the hard work and class his Dad brought to his responsibilities in keeping the Fort Wayne viewing public informed.
"Class" is indeed the right word to describe Dick Florea's contribution to news broadcasting in Fort Wayne. No hype, no fanfare, just accurate, articulate, responsible reporting. He's an intelligent, civil, well-informed gentleman, and that carried through on camera.
Fledgling reporters should watch a couple of hours of tapes of his broadcasts to see how it's done.

Wow, glad to hear that Mr. Florea & family are doing well. Just hearing his name mentioned brings back distant memories of the days when the Press still had some credibility.
He was a real pro and we miss him.

Dick is my grandpa, and stanton is my uncle. Im supried to see an article about them. I'm proud of my uncle and it's fun to hear him and see him on and in media.
