Tracy Warner reports:
County Assessor Pat Love, the only elected Democrat in county government, failed to pass her open-book state exam to achieve a Level II appraisal certification -- for the fifth time. Of 11 people who took the test Oct. 13, she was one of four who didn't pass.
Her lack of success will give Republicans a boost in their attempts to unseat Love next year -- if they run a candidate who has the Level II certification. Love, after all, does have Level I certification -- while her Republican predecessor didn't.
Love makes a case that her duties revolve not around physically assessing properties but administering an office. And by surrounding herself with talented staff, she has performed one of the most important jobs of a manager.
But it would help for the assessor to know the mechanics of property assessment, and if she's re-elected, she must gain Level II certification by the end of 2008 -- or lose office.
She's signed up to take the test again on Nov. 15.
