Homestead alumn Amy Waugh the New Women's B-Ball Coach at Xavier

Amy Waugh has been named by Xavier University as the new women's basketball coach.

Ms. Waugh played high school basketball at Southwest Allen County Schools' Homestead High School.

She has been the assistant coach at Xavier and was formerly an assistant coach at Wake Forest and Youngstown State.

She is a 2003 graduate of Xavier and becomes the first Xavier graduate to be named as women's head basketball coach.

Ms. Waugh also has another distinction.  As the Atlantic 10 Conference noted: 

Waugh garnered national attention when she was crowned the three-point shooting champion at the 15th Annual ESPN College Slam Dunk and Three Point Shooting Championship at the 2003 NCAA Mens Final Four.

 

Tribute From A Soldier for Casey Chesney

Casey Chesney was a neighborhood leader who passed away too early in September of 2008. You may read the original post here.

Fort Wayne Observed recently received this tribute from LT Jeffrey Delong:

As a punk kid back in 1986 Casey took care of myself and my two younger brothers while my parent went away due to a surgery that my dad had to have. We spent two weeks with Casey. At the time it sucked. Casey ran his house in a certain way. I disliked him "at the time". Now I am a Soldier in the United States Army with three kids of my own. I often think back to the lessons I learned from him. It was very recently that I heard about Casey passing. I was very sad to hear that he died. I never had the chance to thank him. I will never forget him.

State Senator Vi Simpson May Need a Dictionary

The Indianapolis Star's story Sunday titled "Democratic Dream: More Legislative Clout"  contained a startling quote from State Senator Vi Simpson:

Given its population, Simpson said, Marion County should have at least six and maybe even seven districts with senators solely representing the county.

"You lose your community of interest," she said. "Marion County is way underrepresented. Marion County is getting gypped. By carving up Marion County, you lose your power. It not only dilutes the Democrats, but it dilutes the community of interest."

We know Senator Simpson to be a sensitive person so we hope she is sensitive to withdrawing her use of the word 'gypped'.  This is reminiscent of stories past regarding a statewide official and a county official  using ethnic terms that are not acceptable.  What is surprising here is that an Indianapolis Star reporter or editor did not catch the use.
