Leslie Conn of the Savannah Morning News has written an article about Hardball Capital owners wanting the City of Savannah, Georgia, to consider building a new taxpayer-financed baseball stadium for the Savannah Sand Gnats. Hardball Capital is the owner of the Fort Wayne Tin Caps baseball team.
Ms. Conn reports:
On Aug. 13, the Sand Gnats' parent company, Hardball Capital, paid to fly Acting City Manager Rochelle Small-Toney, Alderwoman Mary Ellen Sprague and more than a dozen area business leaders to Fort Wayne, Ind., to tour Parkview Field, the year-old arena built for the minor-league TinCaps, which Hardball also owns.
A second trip is planned in September for another Savannah group, which would include other city officials.
"Our thought was that it probably made sense to let the folks in Savannah see what we've done in Fort Wayne," said Jason Freier, co-owner of the Sand Gnats.
Ms. Conn's article also contained this note:
The Savannah group toured the facility and met with members of Fort Wayne's City Council. Hubbard, for one, came away "very, very impressed" and intrigued by the stadium idea.
I can report that I was not one of the members of the Fort Wayne City Council who met with the Savannah representatives.
No Fort Wayne Council member has yet mentioned that he or she met with the Savannah group. If there were members who did so, it must have been a 'select' group of Council members.
And, if there were members of the 9 member City Council who did so, it is hoped that not more than 4 who did for that may have triggered Indiana's Open Door Law, which would have required public notice. As it is, no Fort Wayne media outlet has reported on the visit of the Savannah folks.
A description of the recently expressed views of Councilman John Shoaff and myself may be found here.
If the Savannah article is true, I would strongly urge Savannah officials to review the practice of allowing private entities with business before the City of Savannah to pay the travel expenses of city officials. That is not a good practice; not at all.
