Lugar supporting McCain and No Role in the Obama Campaign

Given the story in Friday's USA Today that said US Senator Barack Obama told a Virginia audience that Senators Chuck Hagel and Dick Lugar would advise him on foreign policy, Fort Wayne Observed asked Mark Helmke, a member of Dick Lugar's foreign policy team, for a comment.

Mr. Helmke replied to FWOb from Ghana:

Lugar has no role in the Obama campaign and will have no role. He supports McCain and has made that clear.

Obama says he respect's Lugar's counsel, and has since he first reached out to Lugar in late 2004 after he was elected.  Obama asked Lugar to brief him on Nunn-Lugar issues and Lugar did take Obama on a trip to Russian weapons sites in 2005.
