One of our kind readers and old friends sent FWOb the letter from Mayor Harold Zeis (served 1964-1972) explaining the history of the design of the City of Fort Wayne flag. She received it from a gentleman who had collected quite a bit of memorabilia of the Bloomingdale neighborhood.
The letter also demonstrates one of the ways that City Utilities used to pay for some public relations activities of the Mayor's office. (The City Utilities budget is not subject to the same review by City Council as is the Civil City budget.)
The letter to FWOb talks of visiting with Mary Drewett Spice, the daughter of the designer of the flag.
Her letter began "I enjoy your FW Observed web site" and closed with "Now to change the subject ... I really enjoy the web site and love the pictures that you put on the site that are taken by Everett White."
"One of my favorite pictures ... is the black and white picture of the wreath on Summit Square that is reflected in the standing water and just the wreath is in color. What a talent!"
Take a bow, Everett.
