This is one of the coolest things I have ever read. Fort Wayne's Wildcat Baseball is being played in South Africa by the Palala Boys Club!
Fort Wayne Peace Corps volunteers Brandon and Rachel Johnson write on their weblog African Daylight. It is an extensive post and the following is only a part. I urge you to visit their weblog to read the whole story.
The best part of this day was the opportunity to present each of the boys (and leaders) with their own t-shirt and baseball hat. Wildcat Baseball League (Fort Wayne, IN), with whom my dad is the Director at Northside Park during the summer months, made a wonderful donation of these items. Before the meeting officially began, my leaders had the boys change into their new outfits for the remainder of club. It was great to see the red, white and blue hats that I recall so fondly from my childhood as a Wildcat ballplayer.
After an opening prayer by Mr. Kgomo, we quickly got things underway. I had decided to talk about "Good Sportsmanship" as the lesson for Week 2, as it seemed to fit perfectly with our activity for the day. I had a simple list of notes, from the "meaning of sportsmanship" to the "reasons why sportsmanship is important" to "examples of good sportsmanship." I had also given each of the boys a copy of a Sportsmanship Checklist that I had created using some resources I found online. While the boys continue to have difficulty understanding English, particularly my accent, Mr. Matsha came to the rescue and helped out considerably with the lesson. By the end, he had taken over completely and I was no longer talking. I couldn't have asked for more.
