An Out-of-Towner's Perspective
Former Fort Wayne resident Zach Klein, a successful Internet entrepreneur who attended New Media, New Rules, had this to say about the response to the event:
Man, I wish all of this boiling resentment had been expressed last night -- whether Gotsch talked too much or not, there was still plenty of time to speak your piece during the panel and Q&A.
I attended as an out-of-towner hoping to get a sense for the dissenting opinions and characters that make up Fort Wayne's amateur political community. Regrettably, and somewhat predictably, an interesting debate was avoided while we were all in the same room and now only occurs in back-channels after the event.
This opportunity for local bloggers to exhibit relevance and professionalism was poorly capitalized.
As a member of the Old Media, Old Rules, this all sounds like what we used to describe as "contemplating one's navel." And isn't it time to stop lauding the superiority of the technology and put it to use as a true information system (sifting and sorting "news") rather than a bunch of self-aggrandizing, unaccountable soap boxes? The answer may have something to do with old-fashioned concepts like investment, capital, personal risk, a business plan and hard work.
